| Consumer Reports™ on Pet Allergies in Humans We think that animals have a lot to offer their human owners. However some people have sensitivities and allergies that prevent them from owning or being involved with certain types of animals.
An article in Consumer Reports™ has stated that "It's not fur but dander, airborne proteins from dried saliva, that turns out to be the real culprit"...causing per allergies in humans. Other allergy culprits are, of course, dust mites and cockroaches. With this in mind, we recommend: - Keep pets out of the bedroom of allergy sufferers
- Give pets weekly baths with a gentle dog shampoo
- Use an allergy wipe-down, especially n the "licking areas" of your dog or cat between baths
- Since dust mites and cockroaches are susceptible to the same products as fleas, treat your home periodically with a safe, pyrethrum-based flea spray to help control all three.
- Wash animal bedding frequently and cover furniture on which pets are allowed to sleep in removable, washable covers. Better yet, don't let pets on the furniture
- Invest in an Allergen-Trapping vacuum
- If allergies to dogs and cats persist to the point that you are prevented from having one, try a bird. Their tongues are dry and have no saliva, and they have a different type of dander that may not affect you the same way.
