The filter has castors that make maneuvering easy, but it is firmly positioned on skids when in place.
The NEW, large, 1.5 L pre-filter is located directly under the pump head. Coarse particles of detritis are immediately caught and cannot collect on the bottom of the canister. Cleaning intervals are longer and cleaning is much easier.
To clean the pre-filter, simply transport the pre filter to the nearest water tap, wash out the pad and reinsert the clean pre-filter pad back into the filter.
Now the pre-cleaned water falls to the bottom of the canister and starts to flow through 3 filter baskets which hold 4 L each (total filter volume: 12 L + 1.5 L pre-filter = 13.5 L).

It uses a unique diatom powder to filter particles as small as one half - one diatom in size. Even some parasites and bacteria are large enough to be trapped and pulled out of the water by a diatom filter. Diatom Filters remove many free-swimming infective stages of various parasites from the tank water before they can attach to their hosts, and when the attached adult parasites on the fish die, the fish are eventually left parasite-free. A refugium can be used for something as simple as just increasing your water volume or it can enhance your tank' performance and stability in many, many ways.
It is a miniature ecosystem attached to your main tank often housing isolated populations of sensitive animals or plants. Much like a greenhouse on a space ship, a refugium will improve the quality of your saltwater system by adding extra filtration, bio-nutrients and other food sources as well as giving refuge to sensitive species.
Refugiums can be used to keep the peace in your salt water tank: used as a refuge chamber for the more delicate species such as sea horses and peppermint shrimp (to name just two) who would otherwise become a food source for the other inhabitants of the tank. It can also provide a place to raise fry in a tank that shares the water with their birth tank
Refugiums can be used to supply live food and planktons to your aquarium. They are well suited to cultivate food sources such as algae and micro-fauna separate from the predation by herbivorous inhabitants of the main tank. Cultivating Caulerpa and other macroalgaes can help to consume ammonia/nitrates and phosphates that accumulate unhealthfully in your tank.
Refugiums can help maintain pH levels.
Overflow boxes are typically used to bring water from the main aquarium to the wet-dry filter or the sump. They consist of a "skimmer" box inside the tank (that has small slits to help prevent smaller fish from "overflowing" out of the tank and into the sump) and a larger box with hose attachments outside the tank. Water that rises above the level of the "skimmer" will "overflow" into the sump below, thus keeping the water level in the tank constant.
The surface of the water is constantly skimmed, removing undesirable film and enhancing gas exchange. Additionally, the water is aerated as the water falls over the overflow, down the drain and splashes into the sump.

A reef sump has important benefits to any aquarium.By using the sump to hold extra water, the volume of water in the system is increased. Evaporation from the tank itself is mitigated by the reserve in the sump, preventing the annoying need to constantly add water to the tank and calcium or ssalt lines being constantly visible.
Additionally, larger water volume in saltwater systems makes the system more stable. The chemistry and temperature change on a day to day basis in a large volume of water is less by percentage than the same change to a smaller volume of water.
The sump is the ideal place to house equipment such as heaters, filters, skimmers, thermometers or any other equipment that detracts from the aesthetics of the tank. These Sumps have ample room for all of the supplementary aquarium devices, and the open top makes maintaining the equipment easy.
The sump is an excellent place to add new water, medicate, adjust chemical balances etc. By using the water in the sump, the effect of changes to the chemistry is less dramatic on the delicate inhabitants of the tank (having been diluted by the sump water before it is introduced into the main tank)
Sizing: The size of your sump is generally dictated by the space into which you will fit it. If you are going to invest in a sump, make is as big as your area can handle without inhibiting your ability to get equipment in and out of it without dismantling it - the bigger the better.
Sump or Wet-Dry?
Easy to use, the unit hangs on the back or the side of the aquarium, just like a standard filter. It is designed to be self-starting and maintenance-free.
Water enters the filter and is forced over the top of the intake column. There it drips through the mechanical and chemical filter trays, onto the BIO-Wheel where biological filtration (removal of toxic ammonia and nitrite) is efficiently carried out by a commercial-sized BIO-Wheel.
